Inauguration of the temporary exhibition “Letters from Columbus. America in the Casa de Alba”

On September 19, 2024, the Casa de Alba Foundation inaugurated “Letters from Columbus. America at the Casa de Alba”, an exhibition that shows the American heritage preserved in the family collection, highlighting the close relationship between the Casa de Alba and America since Columbian times. Curated by Consuelo Varela Bueno, a researcher at the CSIC School of Hispano-American Studies, specializing in the figure of Christopher Columbus, and Álvaro Romero Sánchez-Arjona, cultural director of the Casa de Alba Foundation, it can be visited in the Liria Palace.

“Thanks to this exhibition, I am proud to be able to share unique documents and objects, essential for learning about American history, preserved by my family for generations. For me it is a duty to share this heritage with society,” said the Duke of Alba, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart and Martínez de Irujo.

The exhibition includes a wide variety of pieces such as documents, pre-Columbian and viceregal objects, decorative arts and unpublished portraits, all of them of great historical and artistic value. Among the more than 150 pieces on display, the 24 Autographs of Christopher Columbus stand out, which, kept in the Liria Palace, form the largest group assembled by any institution and which are being fully exhibited for the first time.
